Why electrolytes matter:

When horses exercise, travel, or are exposed to high temperatures, their body temperature rises, and they cool themselves primarily through sweating. This sweat not only causes fluid loss but also results in the loss of vital body salts—electrolytes.

These include sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, all of which play crucial roles in muscle contraction, nerve function, and maintaining cellular hydration. While potassium is generally abundant in forage-based diets, sodium and chloride are typically lacking and must be supplemented daily, especially for horses in regular work.
